Corrosion failures continue to occur and in the worst cases the economic, social or ecological consequences can be ruinous.  The type of environment to which a material is exposed is a major factor in determining the type and severity of corrosion undergone. Minor constituents of the surroundings can be critical, aggravating or suppressing corrosive attack.

 

Both organic and metallic coatings are used to provide protection against corrosion of metallic substrates. Corrosion control enables the full useful lifetime of components, machinery, plant, and buildings to be realised and brings benefits to the economy, the environment, and improves safety and quality of life. Recent Cost-of-Corrosion studies in the UK have shown that there is still a need to promote best practice in preventing corrosion. Whilst cost is an important consideration it is not the only issue. Safety is of paramount importance in many cases and environmental impact is becoming increasingly significant.

 

The widespread use of water-borne, high solids, solvent-free, radiation-cured products and coating powders in many industrial painting processes has played a key role in reducing VOC emissions.
